With the approval by the State Council - the Chinese Government, the Ministry of State and Resources formally authorized PetroChina, China’s largest oil and gas producer, with the rights for oil and gas exploration and development in South China Sea on July 6. Opening of offshore deep-sea area is a benchmark event for PetroChina because the oil giant was earlier authorized only for onshore oil and gas operation and the shallow sea area with a water depth of no more than five meters. Based on China’s standards, the oil and gas fields with the water depth exceeding five meters are defined as offshore oil and gas fields.
