This article describes the thermal imaging device jointly designed and manufactured by the British Aerospace Department of Power and the British Ministry of Defense Procurement Department. This is a multi-purpose system that includes weapons used to evaluate night vision. The thermal imager is a multichannel, parallel-scan system operating in the 8-14 micron band that produces 160 lines of high spatial resolution images. The system is presented in this paper, which includes predictive values of the key characteristic parameters of detection distance and recognition distance, and outlines the results of these parameter values in a laboratory test prototype. The initial field trial results on these predicted performances are briefly described.
