西部,对于我们美术人乃至艺术人、文化人来说,是那样的陌生,又是那样的熟悉。古往今来,不知多少学者、艺术家和著作家曾探索、表现过这种遥远、古朴和神秘。而今天,历史翻开了新的一页。“西部”已成了当前中国一个特定的概念,而且成了世纪伊始使用频率最高的词语。是的,社会的发展是那样的快速,中国人、尤其“东部人”已在日渐脱贫甚至走上致富。然而,当世界在物欲横流的现代“文明”破坏中困惑彷徨的时候,国人蓦然回首西部并从中得到了安慰,所幸还有一片让我们藉以反思的真正“西方净土”。今天,当我们再度遥望西部的时候,相信会少了几分猎奇,多了几分警醒;少了几分怜悯,多了几分崇敬——那里是中华文明的发祥地,我们将以全新的观念,从更高的起点去建设真正的当代文明！ 2000年8月17日,由中国艺术研究院、中国文化报社主办,中国艺术研究院美术研究所承办了题为“西部大开发中的美术”学术研讨会,会议由本刊主编、美术研究所所长邓福星主持,来自中宣部、文化部和国家文物局等领导及有关专家、学者、艺术家30余人会聚一堂,各持已见、建言献策。下面摘其要点,基本上依发言先后,略作分类调整,刊出以飨读者,并期引起更广泛的重视和听到更多真知灼见。

Fortunately, there is another real “Western Pure Land” where we can reflect on it. Today, when we look to the west again, I believe it will be a little bit less adventurous and more vigilant; less sympathetic and more respectful - there is the birthplace of Chinese civilization, and we will take a completely new concept , From a higher starting point to build a real contemporary civilization! On August 17, 2000, the symposium titled “Art in the Great Western Development” was sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Arts and the China Cultural Newspaper Art Institute. The conference was co-authored by the Journal of Fine Arts Institute Director Tang Fuxing presided over by more than 30 leaders from the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Culture and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, together with more than 30 experts, scholars and artists, gathered together and made suggestions.
