The formation of public museums is closely related to the Enlightenment, which had a huge impact on human history. From the late 17th century to the 18th century, new ideas on the European continent continued to emerge. People began to get rid of the control of traditional religious ideas, explore nature, and re-understand history. In 1683, the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford in England opened to the public and became Europe’s first public museum.
