Thyroid ultrasound is a noninvasive, reliable technique for evaluating thyroid size and anatomy in adults. Due to the continuous improvement of technical quality, it is now successfully used in all pediatric age groups. There are two main indications for the use of this technique in pediatrics: 1 is for newborns with suspected low congenital hypothyroidism, to determine the presence or absence of thyroid tissue in their normal position, and 2 to estimate thyroid size and morphology.
