关于曹操的身世,《三国志·魏书·武帝纪》记载:“桓帝世,曹腾为中常侍大长秋,封费亭侯。养子嵩嗣,官至太尉,莫能审其生出本末。”对曹操父亲曹嵩的出生本末不太清楚。裴松之在注《三国志》引吴人作《曹瞒传》时说:“嵩,夏侯氏之子,夏侯惇之叔父。”这实际上说明,曹嵩本来并不姓曹,而是姓夏侯,由于过继给宦官曹腾作养子,才改姓曹。曹操对夏侯氏兄弟,也一直以本家视之。而陈寿作《三国志》也将夏侯氏与曹氏同传。所以,曹操本来不姓曹,而应姓夏侯。
