The U.S. Bureau of Mines plays an important role in the revival of precious metals in the western United States. Many of the technologies that have been applied to industry for the extraction of gold and silver in the past thirty years have been advocated and developed by the Bureau of Mines. In 1952, the technology of gold washing from granular activated carbon was studied so that activated carbon could be reused. The concept of heap leaching in 1969 was applied to the treatment of some low-grade gold, silver and waste mines. The combination of heap leaching technology with a carbon adsorption-desorption process can be economically processed using inexpensive raw materials. A hypochlorite oxidation process was studied in 1970 to improve the extraction rate of gold during the cyanidation treatment of carbonaceous gold deposits. Back in the fifties, “carbon slurry” technology was used to extract gold from ores, but cyanidation was economically unprofitable due to its fixed price and operating costs. The Mining Bureau and the Holmes Tank Mining Company opened the Coking Intermediate Plant, which was used in 1972 in the industrial production of the Holmes Tank Mine. In 1973, a pressurized stripping method of desorbing gold and silver from activated carbon was developed. This method can reduce the operating time required for the elution process. The alcohol stripping method developed in 1976 can also reduce the elution time of activated carbon. In 1979, a new method for the pretreatment of the mines was proposed, which could make the heap leaching technology be applied in the processing of the clay precious metals. For these technologies, almost all precious metal mining companies use at least one in the production plant.
