周姓是中国的望族大姓。远在魏晋南北朝时期,南朝的周姓已成为仅次于“王”、“谢”两大世族的高门。时称北方有“崔、卢、李、郑”,南方有“王、谢、顾、周”。《百家姓》是赵宋王朝遵循魏晋南北朝的先例,按当时的贵贱、等级再次编排姓氏次序,并带有启蒙深本性质的书籍。在《百家姓》里,“赵、钱、孙、李、周、吴、郑、王”。周姓名列第五,阀阅清贵。何以周姓在中国历史上能长期保持其世系繁衍与经久不衰的社会地位,原因自然是多方面的。除了周姓子孙隆德守道、奋发自强,各个朝代人材迭出之外,应与周姓祖先创立宏伟大业有关连。
