The distribution of adrenergic and cholinergic nerves in the ovary provides anatomic evidence that the autonomic nervous system may have a regulatory role in ovarian function. Guinea pig adrenergic nerves are mainly distributed around the ovarian stromal glands and associated stroma vessels. In addition, the positive fibers of the body fibers around the luteal small arteries staining for acetylcholinesterase suggest that both adrenergic and cholinergic nerves may regulate ovulation and steroidogenesis. The decrease of norepinephrine (NE) content in guinea pig ovaries is associated with compensatory hypertrophy and ovulation in ovary.
