中国体育全面走向市场之时,正是国外烟草在中国大行其道之日。就目前已有的赛事来看,万宝路足球联赛、555中国汽车拉力赛、希尔顿篮球联赛(此前为555中国篮球联赛)、沙龙网球公开赛等等,大凡有点影响的赛事,几乎毫无例外地挂上了一个烟草的标识,名字一个赛一个地响——中国体育成了烟草商们最大也是最好的一块广告牌。对于这样一个局面,我国于1995年2月1日实施《广告法》后,曾对烟草是否还能一如既往地“赞助”体育赛事有过争论。因为《广告法》中的某些规定牵扯到国家体委足、篮、排、羽、自行车、汽车拉力赛、网球、台球、保龄球等多个运动项目,后经多方磋商,体育比赛场馆内的香烟广告被取消了,但冠名还是保留了下来。
