意大利历来重视海军建设,19世纪末意大利海军已跻身世界海军强国之列。在意大利海军的各种兵力兵器中,其水雷以产量多、质量好而著称。意大利的水雷是在20世纪60年代发展起来的,80年代后开始大量出口,现已是国际水雷市场的佼佼者。意大利的水雷生产商主要有米萨、白头和瓦尔泰克等公司,它们共生产10余个品种的水雷,包括沉底雷、锚雷、特种水雷等多种类型,出口的水雷主要有“曼塔”水雷、MR-80水雷和MRP水雷等型号。1991年的海湾战争中,伊拉克布放的“曼塔”沉底雷曾击伤美军的现代化舰艇,由此意大利水雷名声大噪。
