The issue of what we call the third industrial revolution, the far-reaching changes that computers and associated communications and control systems have brought about, has already been discussed. This issue will examine how some of the newly developed materials and machines revolutionized all aspects of our lives. In the first article, John Wood shows how material scientists now meet the needs of engineers and designers; when engineers and designers want to develop materials that have certain characteristics, they can be provided with the materials they require; In other words, we provide new material as soon as we ask for it.
