中国竹雕艺术是明清之际从原来局限于竹器的附加雕饰和日用品的制作中逐渐独立出来的。明代的朱鹤、朱缨、朱稚征、濮仲谦,清代的吴之瑶、封锡禄、周颢等名家推动,竹雕艺术遂发展成浮雕、圆雕、透雕、留青、竹黄等雕刻技艺完备的文人艺术品。然而,无论竹雕界还是书画界,埋在地下的竹根都鲜有人问津。现代竹雕艺术家周汉生却偏偏与竹根结下不解之缘,在深山竹海处,一寻就是大半辈子,用尽毕生心血,把这看似无用之材变为艺术佳作。
