At the Illinois State Agricultural Experiment Station, plant physiologist Ogin and plant biochemist Weidmhom are conducting a far-reaching study that has advanced the clock for soybean evolution millions of years ago. Their research is based on the following: From 1950 to 1965, it was found that plants can be divided into two types of photosynthesis. One is the type of photorespiration (PR), which emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in the presence of light during photosynthesis; one is non-photorespiratory (NPR) type that emits no carbon dioxide in the presence of light. Non-photorespiration-type plants have higher rates of assimilation and faster growth than photorespiratory-type plants. Belonging to non-photorespiratory type of crops are sugarcane, corn, sorghum and so on.
