The impact of the natural space environment on spacecraft design, development and operation is the subject of a series of NASA RP reports prepared by the Department of Electromagnetic and Aerospace Environment, Systems Analysis and Integration Laboratory, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Among them, the NASA RP-1390 provides a detailed overview of the seven major environmental aspects of a natural space environment, including their simple definitions, associated model plans, and their impact on various spacecraft subsystems. The report provides more than 100 cases of spacecraft failures and anomalies attributed to the natural space environment from 1974 to 1994 and provides a statistical analysis of the natural space environment and its impact on spacecraft. Article is the introduction and comment on this report.
