ｃＤＮＡ代表着基因的编码顺序，ｃＤＮＡ文库中一个ｃＤＮＡ克隆的已测序部分即为一个ＥＳＴ（ｅｘｐｒｅｓｓｅｄｓｅｑｕｅｎｃｅｔａｇ）。通过完成不同ｃＤＮＡ文库中ｃＤＮＡ克隆的部分测序及它们在染色体上的定位，我们就可得到一个由ＥＳＴ组成的人类基因组的表达图谱（ｅｘｐｒｅｓｓｉｏｎｍａｐ），这将大大推进人类基因组项目中基因识别和定位的研究，为遗传病致病基因的克隆创造有利条件。本文综述了表达图谱构建的进展、存在的问题及其前景。
