This article describes the characteristics of high pressure roll mill (HPGR) model. The model describes the throughput, particle size range, and drive power of a high pressure roll mill for a given gauge, roll speed, and typical sample. It only needs input data obtained from a simple laboratory crushing test and a limited lab scale high pressure roller mill test procedure. The model uses these data for calibration purposes and is then scaled up to an industrial-scale device that is theoretically any size. By applying a different crushing mechanism to the edge region of the roll, the so-called “edge effect” is explicitly described. The geometry and working pressure of high-pressure roll mills are related to working clearances, from which the driving power, throughput and product size distribution can be estimated. This article includes examples of scaling up from laboratory to semi-industrial and industrial scale equipment.
