在《星际旅行》电影故事中出现过的虚拟现实技术已不再是科幻了.美国陆军正在利用虚拟现实技术来开发下一代车载武器系统.“洞穴自动虚拟环境”(Cave AutomaticVirtual Environment)设施由一间3m×3m×3.大小的房间和里面的三维视像设备、一些投影仪及镜子组成,但是士兵们必须要戴上特制的眼镜后才能感受到这套设备所生成的虚拟环境,比如,士兵可以坐在虚拟的车辆里面,他不仅能感受到车和周围的虚拟设备,还可以与计算机虚拟出来的车组人员进行交流.美陆军现在拥有两套这样的“洞穴”系统,一套在密歇根州的沃伦,另一套在肯塔基州的Fort Knox,这两套系统可以互相连接起来,这样士兵们就可以在不同的地方进入同一个虚拟环境,面对同一个工程问题.美陆军现正在用一些项目不同的研制阶段对该设施进行试验,借以测试其稳定运行和适应不同工作要求的能力.目前进行的一个项目是对某些现有车辆重新设计,另一个是“Grizzly”扫雷车的研制.
