淬火介质的冷却特性对于淬火质量具有很大影响。而淬火介质冷却特性因淬火另件材质不同、另件形状和大小不同而有不同要求。有的要求冷却快一些,有的求要冷却稍慢一些;有的要求前阶段快些而后阶段慢些等等。对某一特定成份的淬火介质而言,只能具有一定的冷却特性,往往不能满足另件多样性要求。有时用一种冷却介质专用于一种另件的淬火也满足不了要求,还必须分段淬火(或叫双液淬火)。这就使工艺过程复杂化,而且
