清廷惯于每岁召重臣赐宴,席间分韵赋诗联句为戏,每有赐笔墨砚纸事。另编纂事竣或因某项有功者亦常有所赐。赐砚,康、雍两朝以松花石者为主,乾隆朝改为歙石、端石、澄泥者,盖松花石材日竭不得不易之他类。凡七式,曰仿汉未央砖海天初月砚;曰仿汉石渠阁瓦砚;曰仿唐八棱澄泥砚;曰仿唐观象砚;曰仿宋玉免朝元砚;曰仿宋德寿殿犀纹砚;曰仿宋天成风字砚。歙石制者最多,次端石,次澄泥。镌御制砚铭,镌名称。亦有只镌御铭或只镌名称者,亦有御铭无篆印,或铭项全无者,亦如官窑瓷之有无款者。御铭文字不一,一式一般两种。多为楷书,篆隶亦有。砚为宫内造办处
