Utilizing the phase perturbation generated on the aperture plane to shift the quantized phase error along the aperture, the phase error of the phased array antenna due to the quantization error of the digital phase shifter can be significantly smoothed out. Data analysis shows that pointing deviations can generally be reduced by at least two orders of magnitude, and directional deviations can be reduced by an order of magnitude, even if the number of bits in the digital phase shifter is as low as two.
