本书是《学人小品丛书》之一种。著者徐一士是我国近代文史掌故大家,书中精选90余篇小品,分为人物述林、旧闻杂记、湘军谈萃、典制丛谈、科举故实五辑,涉及近代政治、军事、文化、经济各个领域,尤重于人物、缺席史实、轶事之考订,凡晚清民初之军政要员、学界巨子、文章大师、名伶艺人之事迹,政治军事制度、建置、体制之形成及演变,均有记述。
