The National Symposium on Engineering Geology of the China Geological Society consisted of a National Symposium on Weak Rocks and Weak Interlayers, which was held from September 2nd to 7th, 1980 in Yichang City, Hubei Province. This is the first special academic conference since the establishment of the Engineering Geological Special Committee. Eighty-three representatives from various production departments, research institutes and universities in the country attended the meeting. The conference received a total of 54 papers (64 papers), which basically reflected the current status and level of engineering geology research on soft rock and weak interlayer in China. Gu Dezheng, chairman of the Engineering Geology Professional Committee, presided over the meeting and delivered an opening speech. He reviewed the history of research on weak rocks and weak interlayers in China; he described its important position in engineering geology and its engineering significance; and pointed out the future research directions of soft rocks and weak interlayers. After the opening ceremony of the conference, the papers and special report on the topic were presented for the past two days; two days of group discussion. The group discussion mainly revolved around three issues: 1. The meaning of weak rock and weak sandwiches; 2. The research status and gaps at home and abroad, and the main direction for future attacks; 3. Suggestions for the review of the conference and suggestions for future academic activities. Comrades participating in the conference freely expressed their opinions, and all the officials had seen and exchanged academic thoughts and work experience. In the spirit of a hundred schools of thought contending and seeking common ground while reserving differences, it also organized reports and exchanges between the various groups of the General Assembly. Comrade Gu Dezhen made a report entitled “The status quo and development trends of international engineering geology research” and was warmly welcomed by the comrades present. The four major issues of this conference are briefly described below.
