1895年,中国民族资产阶级的代表人物、近代著名实业家张謇在南通创办了第一个近代企业——大生纱厂。此后几十年间,逐渐形成了以棉纺织为主体的大生企业集团,并发展为一个以南通为中心的苏北东南部经济区,在中国近代经济史上占有相当重要的地位。著名历史学家章开沅教授曾经指出:“研究20世纪初期中国资本主义的发展,研究20世纪初期中国资产阶级,如不研究南通,不研究张謇,我们认为是一个重大的缺陷,张謇可以说是当时资产阶级的第一号头面人物。”近年来,国内外的历史学家、经济学家、社会学家对张謇及其创办的大生企业研究的兴趣非常浓厚。日本、美国、法国、新加坡的专家、学者已有不少专著问世;国内的学术研究也十分活跃,也发表出版了不少论文与专著。今年8月,拟在南京与南通举行国际性的学术讨论会,国内外的著名学者专家将汇聚一堂,对张謇及其创办的大生企业进行深入
