2006年10月28日晚7时许,83岁的霍英东在北京回暖的秋意中溘然辞世。在与癌症抗争了23年之后,他终于再无法掌控自己的命运。他的病情此前已有警兆：2006年6月,因为健康状况突然恶化。霍英东被中央派出的专机直送北京救治：其后,病危的消息曾几度传出。不过,直到霍家重要成员齐集北京,人们才隐约猜测到发生了什么。2006年10月29日上午,香港沙宣道33号,那栋用一块块大石建造起的欧陆古堡,曾经聚集着荣耀与艳羡的霍家大宅,正被淡淡的阴郁笼罩着,即便前面开阔的大屿山海景也无法将之化解。闻讯而来的数十名记者,追逐着每一个进出这里的人,甚至一度引起住家报警投诉。霍家来往的亲友,即便霍宅那个印度裔的管理员,脸上也带着愁容。
