Global Telecoms Climate: In 1996, the global telecom services market (including public network services for wired and wireless voice, data, video and the Internet) hit a record high of $ 718 billion. And even more surprising is that by the year 2000, that figure will continue to grow at a rate of 10% per annum. The driving force of this growth comes from the integration of the global market and the continuous adoption of new telecommunication services. More than a decade ago, most telcos only provided basic voice services. Today, wired voice services still account for more than 65% of their sales. By 2000, wired voice transmission is expected to drop to 60% of telecommunication revenue, with the remaining 40% to be covered by emerging voice, data, information systems, networking and integration services, mobile communications, advertising services and interactive services instead. In addition, removing the regulation of the telecommunications industry worldwide has reduced the barriers for companies to enter the telecommunications market and has also increased the competition among these service providers. In order to ensure competitive advantage, telecom providers have to reduce their costs, mentioning
