Definition and Classification of Acute Kidney InjuryrnBefore the RIFLE classification system of acute renal failure (ARF) was proposed in the Second Conference of Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI, an international volunteer organization mainly composed of intensivists and nephrologists in developed countries) in 2002, there were more than 35 diagnostic criteria of ARF in different literatures, which led to confusion in clinical practice and epidemiological investigation(1).
