Chinese buyers are planning to bid for land equivalent to three-quarters of England’s size (with nearly 200,000 cows) in Australia, underscoring the growing meat demand in China’s newly emerging middle class. Dealogic’s data show that China’s increasingly meat-based diet has allowed Chinese companies to pay nearly $ 20 billion over the past five years for cross-border acquisitions in the food sector. However, as the United States and other countries worried about their own food safety issues, the acquisition of Chinese-funded enterprises also brought conflicts. Now it is Australia’s new Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, who is heading for a government that has to weigh the benefits of foreign agricultural investment with fears of expanding foreign ownership.
