翻蔓是甘薯生产上习用的田間管理措施,据說能防止蔓节生根,抑制茎叶徒长,改变甘薯块根生长的环境条件,促进块根的增长,被认为是甘薯栽培上必不可少的增产措施。我国各地种植甘薯几无不翻蔓者,翻蔓的方法多种多样,翻蔓的年代也相当久远。据一百多年前的古书《双谿物产疏》(一八一九年)中記載:“蔓須隔日一翻,否則根多而实小”。由于翻蔓已成为甘薯栽培上的习慣,且有較久的历史,因此提出甘薯不宜翻蔓就很难为人接受了。事实上早在三百多年前的古农书中已有不翻蔓栽培甘薯的記載。明朝
