The glycoprotein gp120, which is located on the surface of the HIV virus, can inactivate human B immune cells, a conclusion given in a previous study in Nature - Immunology. This finding explains why HIV patients have a weak antibody response. It has been found that HIV can cause the continuous loss of CD4 + helper T immune cells, resulting in impaired immune system function, and other infections are easier to take advantage of. But people have not figure out why in the early stages of HIV infection, T cells are still relatively normal when the body does not produce a powerful antibody response. Claudia Cicala and colleagues found that the HIV gp120 protein can act directly on B cells via the host cell surface receptor α4β7.
