《势力不灭论》,王国维译于清光绪二十六年庚子(1900年)夏六月。原署“德国海尔模壑尔兹著,英人额金孙英译本,海宁王国维重译”,编入樊炳清辑《科学丛书》第二集,罗氏《教育世界》社光绪二十九年癸卯(1903)年刊行。“海尔模壑尔兹”(Helrmholtz,1821—1894),今译赫尔姆霍茨(亦译“亥姆霍兹”);“势力不灭论”,今通称“能量守恒与转换定律”,恩格斯在《自然辩证法》一书中称此与达尔文的“进化论”、施旺(Schwann,1810—1882)、施莱登(Schleiden,1804—1881)的“细胞学说”,为十九世纪“具有决定意义”的“三大发现”。拙著《王国维与近代东西方学人》、《王国维年谱》,对此均有介绍。这里选刊的是王译《势力不灭论》的节录,为便于阅读,特拟加了小标题,即:一、科学与艺术;二、势力不灭的宇宙法则;三、科学与诗及创世纪传说;四、科学之光明与人类之运命。其中最可注意的是第三节内介绍了“德国大诗人奇台Goethe之著作Faust”,在《红楼梦评论》及《静庵文集》的其他论述中,改译为“格代之大著述《法斯特》”。这可能是本世纪开局年代第一次译介歌德及其名著《浮士德》,虽片鳞只羽,亦弥足珍贵。第三节关于“人类之末日”的译述,实寄寓了译者本人对宇宙之广漠、人生之无常、未来之光明与暗黑难于把握的深沉之
