本方出自北周姚僧垣《集验方》,由陈皮、半夏、竹茹、枳实、甘草、生姜组成,为治病后胆寒虚烦不眠之剂。“温胆”即温胆散寒之意。方中生姜用量独重,确有温胆之能。后世医家,不断使本方的主治范围扩大,原方的药物亦有所增加,渐为清化痰热,理气和胃之剂。《医方集解》列为和解之剂。陈修园《时方歌括》将其列为“寒能胜热”之剂,并说:“热除痰清而胆自宁和,即温也。温之者,寒凉之也。”秦伯未则解释说:“本方称为温胆,是根据胆的性质,以期达到升发的作用。与温脾、温肾等的温字,意义完全不同。”
