Johannes Bohovski (1917-1965), one of the most important German poets of the mid-twentieth century. Born in East Prussia, studied art history in Berlin in his early years, enrolled in the army after the outbreak of World War II and began to write poetry. He was captured in the Russian front and returned to East Berlin in 1949. He has been editor of a publishing house and died in 1965. Published poems “The Shadow Land” (1962), “The Storm Proximity” (1966) and “The Undergrowth of the Wind” (1970). There are also two other novels and three volumes of prose works. He won the 1961 West Germany four seven society literature prize and some of the more important international literature prize. His poem, compatible with tradition and modernity, concise and poetic in language, vivid in image, highly sums up the pain and introspection of modern people’s living predicament and thus quickly gained wide international recognition within a few short years before his death. Among the poets in the former East Germany, his poetic works have deep sadistic nature and indeed extraordinary.
