沅江位于湖南省西部,是湘、资、沅、澧四大水系之一。在长江七大支流中,水量仅次于金沙江和岷江。沅江东以雪峰山与资水为邻,南以苗岭与柳江分界,西以梵净山与乌江相隔,北以武陵山与澧水分野。沅江发源于贵州省东南部,分南北两源:南源龙头江,源出都匀县城西云雾山鸡冠岭;北源重安江,源出麻江县北之大山。两水汇合后称清水江,至金紫入湖南省境。东流至黔城会(氵无)水后,水量大增,始称沅江。沅江于湖南境内流经会同、黔阳、怀化、溆浦、辰溪、泸溪、沅陵、桃源、常德诸县境,在德山注入洞庭湖。
