Cirrus Logic (Austin, TX), a chip maker, recently announced a new digital PWM technology that reduces the power consumption of audio amplifiers, improves sound quality, and reduces the cost and size of the device. In addition it can simplify the PWM amplifier design. At the heart of this technology is a digital signal processor (DSP) that controls and manages the power amplifier and audio processing tasks. This embedded DSP controls the speed of the switch and the associated “dead times” to reduce the frequent fluctuations in the PWM amplifier.
