Corsica, an island of the Mediterranean, about 170 kilometers from Nice, has always been a land of racism among nations. From the beginning of the BC, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Germans, Byzantines, Lombards and Genoese all came into the island. In 1767 the Genoese sold Corsica to France and thereafter became French territory. Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island two years later. Marie Claude Petégala, the French contemporary dancer who led the Marseille ballet mission to China, also grew up in Corsica. Her black hair, dark skin, looks typical of the Mediterranean. Her surname in dialect means “Gaul Stone.” The slender artist character is indeed as strong as a stone, but she is also influenced and fostered by the French native culture.
