面瘫是一种症状而并非一种疾病。颞骨内面神经受侵害的原因有四种,即肿瘤、感染、骨折及自发性面瘫(Bell’s Palsy)。肿瘤所致的面瘫自有症状至面瘫出现常需数月,突发面瘫者非常少见。感染所致的面瘫最常见者为慢性胆脂瘤性中耳炎或肉芽型中耳炎;偶见耳部带状疱疹。颞骨外伤性面瘫若为颞骨横行骨折,则绝大部分的面神经受到严重损害,头部挫伤严重者也足以导致骨缝分离而产生面神经水肿。至于自发性面瘫的病因,目前认识尚不一致。
