石黑一雄(Kazuo Ishiguro)1954年生于日本长崎,1960年随父母移居英国,先后就读于肯特大学和东英吉利大学,获学士、硕士学位。1989年发表《长日留痕》(The Remains of the Day),获布克奖。小说中,庄园管家史蒂芬斯(Stevens)对自己在达灵顿勋爵(Lord Darlington)时期的生活进行了回顾和反思。为了在工作上做到尽善尽美,史蒂芬斯拒绝了肯顿小姐(Miss Kenton)的爱情暗示,眼睁睁看着自己心爱的人另嫁他人,甚至压制了对父亲的爱,在父亲去世的时候也未能侍于床榻。在小说的结尾,史蒂芬斯决定改变自己对待往事和生活的态度,向前看去,享受落日的余晖。选文部分以对话的形式展开:女仆肯顿小姐告诉史蒂芬斯她接受了一位熟人的求婚,史蒂芬斯表面显得无动于衷,迫不及待结束与肯顿的谈话好上楼为客人服务,其实他对肯顿的爱一直藏在内心的某个角落,未曾离去。
Born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1954, Kazuo Ishiguro emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1960 and studied at the University of Kent and the University of East Anglia with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. 1989 “The Remains of the Day”, won the Booker Award. In the novel, Manor housekeeper Stevens reviews and reflects on his life in Lord Darlington. In order to be perfect at work, Stephens rejected Miss Kenton’s love hints, watched her beloved, marry another, even suppressed her love for her father, and failed her father’s death Waiting in bed. At the end of the novel, Stephens decided to change his attitude toward the past and life, looking forward and enjoying the sunset. The electoral section opens in conversation: Miss Madon, the maid, tells Stephens that after accepting an acquaintance, Stephens seems indifferent and can not wait to end her conversation with Kenton to serve the guests well, in fact, Love has been hidden in a corner of my heart, never left.
