Approximately half of men under the age of 70 who survive three weeks after myocardial infarction are able to resume normal activity within 12 weeks of the acute phase. The unrealistic fear of these patients due to false self-perception is a major obstacle to healing. The recently developed self-efficacy scales provide a method of identifying functional areas that may be involved in determining the level of fear. It has been shown that a safe graded stamina and muscle test can change the patient’s self-perception, reduce excessive anxiety and promote the restoration of appropriate activities. When the patient’s wife to participate in exercise tests (including treadmill exercise test) can reduce her anxiety, but also reduce the patient’s tension. When the patient participates in the formal exercise program, the self-efficacy scale shows which patients are overly nervous while exercising and should be closely monitored or advised.
