随着首都城市建设的迅速发展，高层建筑以及对地基工程性能有很高要求的现代化设施日益增多，原有钻探设备已不能完全满足勘探的需要。为保证地质资料的准确，满足钻孔的深度要求，提高机械化程度和钻探功效，充实我国工程地质钻机的系列。勘测处与勘探所共同设计了新型BJ－50型钻机，由北京第三通用机械厂试制成功后，一年多来，该机结合生产任务进行了试验，取得了较好的效果，已于1978年9月中旬通过了初步鉴定。
With the rapid development of capital city construction, high-rise buildings and modern facilities with high requirements on the performance of foundation projects are increasing. The original drilling equipment can no longer fully meet the needs of exploration. In order to ensure the accuracy of geological data, to meet the depth requirements of drilling, improve the degree of mechanization and drilling efficiency, to enrich our series of geological drilling rig. The survey office and the Exploration Institute jointly designed a new type of BJ-50 drilling rig, which has been successfully tested by Beijing Third General Machinery Factory. After more than one year, the aircraft has been tested in conjunction with production tasks and achieved good results. In mid-September, the preliminary identification was passed.
