While the company was just accepting the cost of implementing an IP voice network, a more serious problem - limited security - has given the company an overall rethink of the VoIP deployment plan. Voice streams in circuit-switched networks are currently highly secure and data in IP networks can also be encrypted. However, the voice over the IP network does not enjoy the same level of security. Although device providers are already beginning to address this issue, the problem poses complicated legal issues when companies consider IP voice security. Technical and legal barriers to security and issues surrounding the cost-effectiveness of VoIP are sufficient for many IT organizations to postpone such programs or choose to outsource related programs from service providers willing to take on integration challenges. Abner Germanow, security and telephony analyst at International Data, said: “Security is not part of the current VolP implementation and the Internet’s public key infrastructure does not solve the problem.”
