I. Building a Coastal Integrated Traffic Corridor is Imperative China’s eastern coastal belt covers an area of 13% of the country with a population of 41%. At present, the gross industrial and agricultural output value of this zone has accounted for 59% of the country’s total and its gross national product accounts for 52%. Less than one-seventh of its territory constitutes half of China’s economy. In the future, with the deepening of coastal opening, the return of Hong Kong and Macao, and the acceleration of the process of reunification of China, there will be four huge urban agglomerations in the coastal areas: ① the urban agglomeration of the Bohai Sea centered on Beijing, Tianjin and Dalian; Nanjing and Hangzhou as the center; the Fujian-Taiwan Strait urban agglomeration centered on Xiamen, Fuzhou and Taipei; and the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration centered on Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao.
