The effects of four Pluronics (F68, P123, F127 and L44) on the aggregation and solubilization of five structurally related meso-tetraphenylporphyrin photosensitizers in tumor photodynamic therapy were evaluated. Interactions between photosensitizers and Pluronics at micromolar concentrations were measured by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The millimolar concentrations were evaluated by measuring the kinematic viscosity and the osmolarity. The particle size and zeta potential of Pluronics micelles were measured and the appearance of photosensitizer-Pluronics aggregates was observed using atomic force microscopy. The results show that the hydrophobic photosensitizer [5,10,15,20-Tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphine, THPP] appears to be increased by encapsulation into micellar nuclei
