As the “Chinese Pharmacopoeia” does not impose strict regulations on the origin of certain Chinese herbal medicines, the loss of active ingredients of individual Chinese herbal medicines is serious. For example, in the 1990 edition, a description of the production process of Astragalus is: “In the spring and autumn, digging, removing fibrous roots and sediments, drying, and smashing into rough skin and drying.” The author examined the quality of medicines at the primary level. It was found that 10-20% of the cross-section of astragalus, which has just been purchased from other places, turned green, indicating that the active ingredient in Radix Astragali has been hydrolyzed into arsenic and further oxidized.
