The effect of dodecane and three different alcohol blowing agents [n-butanol, n-hexanol and methyl isobutylmethanol (MIBC)] on the flotation separation of pyrite from Pittsburg 8th coal was investigated. Addition of dodecane resulted in a decrease in selectivity, which was due to the difference in lipophilicity between coal and pyrite, as compared to the hydrophobicity between them, based on the analysis of induction time measurements. The results of induction time also show that pyrite is hydrophilic at gas-water interface and hydrophobic at oil-water interface. The consumption of foaming agent is found to be related to the molecular weight and chemical structure of MIBC. The larger the molecular weight, The more complex the structure, the better its effect. However, the type of frother does not have much effect on the separation of the pyrite itself from the non-pyrite minerals from the coal.
