METHODS: Patients with extensive burn(14), acute abdominal diseases(62), and abdomina l operations(21) were divided into 2 groups: combined treatment+placebo (group A ), and combined treatment+Da Cheng Qi granules (group B). Healthy persons served as normal control (group C). Da Cheng Qi granules were given po or by enemata. Cytokines in peripheral blood were examined dynamically. RESULTS: Times of stools in group B were more than that in group A. ① E xtensive burn: tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNFα) and IL-6 levels in group A within 12 h, on d 4, 7, 18 after burn were higher than that in group C, but TNFα in 93% patients was less than 85 fg*L-1; IL-6 in group B decreased signific antly on d 18. ② Acute abdominal diseases: TNFα, IL-6 levels in SIR or MODS p atients peaked on d 0, increased obviously for more than 1 week; TNFα, IL-6 le vels in group B during SIR decreased significantly on d 3, TNFα in group B decr eased obviously and IL-6 showed lowering tendency during multiple organ dysfunc tion syndrome on d 7. ③ Abdomi nal operations: IL-6 peaked at the end of operation and higher than that in gro up C within 1 week after operation; The time needed for recovery of bowel sound, exsufflation, and defecation in group B was less than that in group A, IL-6 in group B showed decreasing tendency at the end of operation (P=0.056 ). CONCLUSION: Da Cheng Qi granules can decrease plasma IL-6 lev el in extensive burn patients, reduce TNFα and IL-6 levels in acute abdominal dis eases, hasten postoperative intestinal function restoration of patients with abd ominal operation.rn Key words: burns; cytokines; Da Cheng Qi granules
