《基督山伯爵》是法国著名作家大仲马的代表作。小说描写了法老号大副爱德蒙·唐泰斯被人陷害入狱,越狱成功后化名基督山伯爵,报恩、复仇,最终成为巨富的故事,反映了19世纪法国皇帝拿破仑“百日王朝”时期,上流社会的灯红酒绿,绿林强盗的绑架和仗义疏财,还有市民清贫的生活。尽管这部作品问世已有一个半世纪之久,但它至今仍在世界各国流传不衰,被公认为世界通俗小说中的扛鼎之作,大仲马也因而被后人誉为“通俗小说之王”。
