Sperm and egg cell membrane interaction is a key step in mammalian fertilization. In the process of sperm zona pellucida binding, many proteins on the surface of sperm and egg are involved in mutual recognition process. Galactosyl sulfate (SGG) is found in the sperm of mammals and lower vertebrates, mainly in the sperm head, and is synthesized in the early and extensive periods of spermatocytes. Sliver anchivin 1 (SLIP1) is present in vertebrate sperm or egg and is located in the sperm head similar to SGG. SGG binds specifically to SLIP1 and plays an important role in sperm-egg binding. In this paper, the localization of SGG and SLIP1 on the surface of germ cells, the role of SGG and SLIP1 in the process of gametogenesis and related mechanisms are reviewed.
