A study in the United States shows that even an hour sitting in front of a TV every day, the risk of diabetes will increase by 3.4%. Because sitting too long will increase people’s weight, which is one of the risk factors for diabetes. Scientists surveyed 3234 overweight men and women over the age of 25 and divided them into three groups. One group took the drug metformin, one group increased their activity level, while the last group used placebo. At the beginning of the study, subjects in each of the three groups spent an average of approximately 140 minutes per day watching television and another 400 minutes spent working. At the end of the study, increasing activity levels saw less time watching TV and sitting at work - averaging a decrease of about 37 minutes in sitting time per day.
