Radioimmunoassay was used to detect plasma concentrations of digitalis, endothelin, renin, angiotensin and aldosterone in 50 patients with essential hypertension. The results showed that the first two increased or decreased as blood pressure increased or decreased, and the severity of the patient’s disease (P <0.01). The latter three changes were not significant, and no significant correlation between digitalis and endothelin (P> 0.05). This suggests that the regulation of blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension may be related to these two vasoactive substances, which can reflect the change of blood pressure more clearly than renin and angiotensin.
